The challenge was a long entry hall, existing building infrastructure. The program was individual partner offices, conference room, and support space. The charge was to create a space of interest that reflected the dynamic nature of the industry. This was achieve through framing the infrastructure as residual building language regardless of the functional layout and thereby turning it into a positive. Varying use of material and paint colors, aluminum reglets, colored light pockets and one of the first uses of U-Channel glass in the Bay Area was a particular challenge with customs and the local building department. After opening they enjoyed a great deal of success and we were asked to envision an addition to the space in order to add another partner. We couldn't help but to proceed despite the lack of a client. The potential was too attractive to resist. The idea was that a glass house facing the street, yet perched a few feet above, would be transparent through to the pool. To provide for additional FAR and bedrooms we overlaid a transparent volume perpendicular to the street with views of the pool and the hills. Later, that applicant approached me about designing a spec house for them and their associates in the same area. During this process I assisted in selecting a property for purchase, all due diligence, design and approvals. Due to the prominent location of the site, the varied styles of architecture in the direct vicinity and the speculative nature of the investment I felt making a statement was the best decision. One of the best compliments I have received in my career was after the design approval meeting - “I don’t know how you did that.” Thank you. By diligently explaining and investing participants in the design process, decisions became transparent and the benefits to the community became apparent. The initial need was to utilize the site behind the historical victorian residence, currently serving as a bike shop, to create a new commercial space where the bike shop can operate more efficiently.
